Research of film trailers.
Another real life film i have analysed is "paranormal activity". This is a movie based on real life events, which follows a couple who believe that their house is haunted. They have used hand held camera's to record footage of the house to discover if there is anything in the house.
The trailer starts with a shot of the two characters to establish the characters which is a common convention of all trailers as it allows the audience to understand who is going to be in the movie. Also there is not a lot of background music in the begginning as it solely focus' on what the characters are talking about which is the situation they see themselves faced with.
During the trailer we see some of the footage they have recorded in the bedroom which shows us a snipet of the terror they face. This is where they have included the background music which blasts in. This instantly scares the audience as they aren't expecting it. Also, the music is very creepy and eerie setting the scene for the rest of the trailer.
We then see pop up's of reviews the movie has had, including "one of the scariest movies of all time" and "freaky and terrifying". These captions will draw in the audience and give them an insight into how good the movie will be. This is an essential part of most trailers, especially horror, as it shows the audience what type of horror it will be and will prepare them as they will know what reaction to expect.
Then a background music is introduced which sounds like a heartbeat. This will increase the tempo and create suspense. It will also represent someone's heartbeat when they are scared as it will get faster as they get more scared. This is a clever and vital part of the trailer as it will draw in the attention of the audience and will create a tension as they are expecting something bad to happen.
At the end of the trailer the music increases as does the tempo. This is another common convention of scary movies, as most of the action/scary parts happen towards the end. Therefore, at the end of the trailer the more will happen. It will also leave the audience wanting to know more, as they will leave the trailer on a cliffhanger, which will make them want to go and watch the movie at the cinema.
This trailer is simple but very effective. They have not used many special effects as they have used "real life footage" from a hand held camera. They have used music very productively as it creates the atmosphere of the trailer and gives the audience a clear perspective of what the movie will be about.

The first film that i have discovered is "The Haunting in Connecticut" which was filmed in 2009. This is described as a psychological supernatural horror film. The story is centered around Matthew who is being treated for a psychological disorder. His family rent a house near the hospital where they discover the house is haunted.
The trailer starts off with a happy tone, which will deceive the audience. This is a common convention of all horror movies as they want the movie to have a climax at the end. It also has a running background music which has an eerie feel to it which then changes to loud bangs and the sound of piano's playing. These intense impulses will leave the audience feeling like something bad is going to happen. It also sets the tone of the film, and creates an atmosphere for the audience. In all horror movies, there is a part where the music stops and you hear someone talking about something going wrong. This will alert the audience that it is starting to get scary.This scares the audience into believing that it is a really scary movie. This is a clever convention as they believe it is really happening to the characters.
Also clips that have been used demonstrate what the film contains are quick and edgy which don't give too much away about the film but tells the audience that bad things happen to the family and that something is haunting them. They use short snipets of information which is also a common convention of horror movies which we will use in our own film trailer. They use these to draw in their audience and to make them wanting to know more about the movie.
Over the music they have included a small amount of dialogue. This is where the characters are talking about the strange events that have been occuring. This is another common convention of horror films as they build up the suspense and gives the audience an insight into what the characters are like. One key part of the dialogue is when the children are praying. This is a very eerie and spooky convention which will make them feel frightened as they are praying for their lives. This will set the mood for the film.
They have used very little special effects in this trailer, as it is "based on real life events" therefore do not want to use fake imagry if they are convincing the audience that it is real. However they have used it on a couple of occasions when they have things coming out their mouths. This is to create the effect that the character is possesed and to show to the audience that the movie will be graphic.
The credits and intervals are to inform the audience about who has made it and about peoples reaction to the movie. Haunting in Connecticut was produced by " Lionsgate" and "Gold Circle" which are two well known institutes and will show the audience that the movie will be of high quality as they can relate back to their previous works. We then see a few flashes of phrases like " Based on a true story". This is a convention which i see as vital, as our own movie is based on a true story and by including this will make it ever more believable.

Research
As we are producing a film trailer, i need to develop my understanding of how films are made, what the conventions are and how to capture the audiences attention. Firstly i will watch some exsisting horror movie trailers which i will then analyse to see the common conventions of the film trailers. This will help me to know what to include in my own film trailer.

Our Film Idea
Ben, Gemma and I, have decided to create a real-life horror film trailer for our coursework. The plot of our movie is the following. After looking at different story lines we discovered a real-life story about a girl who got killed after having a relationship with a person over the internet. The link for this story is .
•The movie starts with a news report about a girl that has been killed.There is girl Charlie, 15, who becomes apart of an internet site in which she can talk to others and post pictures etc. Whilst on this website, she meets a person named “Sean”. They immediately “fall in love” and exchange pictures and talk constantly. We will film Charlie getting all excited over this, but in Sean case it is apparent at the time that it is a boy of the same age, however this is not the case. Whilst Charlie is at school and home she appears love sick and dreamy although people who know her are concerned that its not all that it seems. Sean begins to ask for strange things from her eg. Sexual pictures but as she believes that he is genuine she falls for it and goes along with it. As these arrive we discover that Sean is with his father Brendan who has been spurring him on to do this. Then Charlie has strange starting to happen to her, like things appearing and feels like someone is watching her. The two arrange to meet, but as he is about to meet Brendan comes up behind her and grabs her and the father and son take her to a deserted quarry. Here they torture and rape her and eventually kill her. The movie ends with her floating in the water, followed by a news report warning people about the dangers of internet dating.
